The 2019/2020 school year I taught Grade 7 and 8 Drama at St. John Paul II Collegiate. It was the first time that I got to teach in my major of theatre and I absolutely loved being able to share my love of theatre with my students and being able to direct the school production.
Drama Environment
Two of the most important aspects to teaching drama is having clear expectations and creating a safe environment for students to explore and take risks in. My class expectations for my drama classroom were always clear from day one and are as followed:
Class Expectations
1) Respect: Respect Yourself, Respect Others and Respect the Space. Respect is huge as it builds a safe environment for everyone to feel comfortable in.
2) Take Risks: I challenge my students to try to push themselves out of their comfort zone at least a little every class. I also acknowledge and let them know that this will look different for everyone and that is okay!
3) Have Fun: I hope my drama classroom is a safe place where students can explore individually and collectively. I also make sure they know that they can come to me anytime they are being pushed out of their comfort level too much or don't feel safe in any way and will never be punished for this.
Safe Environment
On top of clear expectations to build a safe environment I also like to always greet my students at the door at the beginning of the class, make sure I talk to each of them to get to know them a little with attendance questions every class and posting favourite inspirational quotes and messages around the room and sharing them with students regularly.

We also spend the first few weeks in our first Unit really getting to know each other and build relationships and a positive level of respect with each other.

School Production and Drama Club
aI directed and designed the school's production "A Bully's Ballad" by Jason Brooks. During weekly after school rehearsals I worked with students with creating the show both in acting and had student designers that I trained and helped me with the design for the show. Unfortunately we were unable to perform our play due to COVID-19.
I also ran an after School Drama Club once a week. I decided to do this when I had so many students audition for the play but could not cast them all. In Drama Club we learnt different performance skills and then worked together to write and build our own play called "What is a Friend?". Unfortunately we were also unable to perform due to COVID-19. Rationale: 14) The importance of contributing, independently and collegially, to the quality of your school. 12) Create and enhance relations among teachers, parents, and students. - Each of these opportunities taught me the importance of your role as a Teacher in offering and assisting in extra curricular programs. This was a great way to build stronger relationships with students I taught and meet new students that I did not teach. |
