I grew up on a farm in Southeast Saskatchewan with my Mom, Dad, and two brothers. Growing up I spent a lot of time making up games. One of my favourite games to play was school. My mom was a Teacher Assistant so she got me old textbooks from the school that they were going to throw out and from these I would make up my lesson plans to teach my younger brother and cousin. I taught them everything from Math, Science and English and even made up crafts for us to make. From a very young age I had a passion for teaching and when it came to deciding what I wanted to go to university for, teaching seemed like the obvious answer.
While in school I not only took pride in my studies but also was involved in a variety of extra curricular activities. My mom is a very musical person so a major part of my life was taking a variety of music lessons. This included vocal lessons for ten years, piano lessons for eight years, and I played the alto saxophone in the school band for eight years. I also took up dance and took lessons in tap, jazz, hip-hop, ballet, and musical theatre for nine years. In Grade 8 I then found a new love of mine, theatre, when I landed the role of Dorothy Gale in our school production of The Wizard of Oz. From there I acted in three more musicals at my school and competed in Drama Festival as well, winning a variety of awards. So between all my lessons, competitions, recitals and being in a variety of drama productions at our school I was one busy girl.
My love for theatre has still thrived throughout my time at University. I graduated with my Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Theatre in the spring of 2014. During the four years of my degree I dabbled in acting, directing, lighting, costume, and sound design. I also learned many skills and knowledge about theatre in my many theatre classes. I then continued to complete my Bachelor of Education majoring in drama and completed that in December of 2015.
After graduating from University I took almost a year to do some Substitute Teaching. I subbed for the Lethbridge School Division and then moved home to sub in the SE Cornerstone School Division in rural Saskatchewan. While subbing I had the opportunity to teach in a variety of subjects and grade levels. In November of 2016 I then moved to London, England to teach abroad. My first year in London I continued to be a Substitute Teacher so that I could learn about the new curriculum and get a feel for how schools were ran in the UK. My second year teaching in London I took on my own classroom teaching Grade 4. This was an incredible experience and I learnt so much from it.
Along with my teaching experience I have also had various other jobs working with children. Most of my summers were spent teaching Drama camps for a variety of Professional Theatre Companies. I also taught various drama workshops for kids throughout the school year as a job while attending University. One summer I also worked for the Galt Museum in Lethbridge and helped teach and plan field trips and workshops for children and adults. All of these experiences have also helped and shaped my teaching skills over the year.
Teaching has always been a part of my life and I can't wait to see where my career as a teacher takes me. As a teacher my overall goal is to be an inspiration to my students like some of my teachers have been to me. I would not be where I am today if it was not for their guidance and I hope I can have that same impact on my students too.
